A wanna-be boss.?
Q. Six year old purebred german sheperd is starting to sleep on our couch. Never before has she done this, this happens at night and occassionly during the day when we have gone out and left the back of the house open but she knows it is a no no, she has her own chair in the rumpus room and this is driving me nuts...other than that she really is the perfect pooch...Any suggestions greatly appreicated, one thing becoming an outside dog is not an option...

A. Hi! Perhaps because she was allowed on the chair in the rumpus room she thinks she can be on the couch a chair is a chair to dogs.that is why my dogs are not allowed on any furniture.furniture and beds are for the alpha dogs meaning me and my husband. They have little pads you can put on the couch that send out little tingles if the dog gets on the couch and they really hate it. I saw it on www.petsafe.com it is called a scat mat.Good Luck!

How Do I Get Papers For My Dog?
Q. OK, I have a purebred Rottweiler male stud that I would like to get papers for, because we want to breed him. The previous owner had his papers, but he was in jail and we took his dog for him so he would have a loving home and be cared for. That was about 2 years ago, and we were always worried about him not having papers because we want to breed and possibly show him. I have looked around but have not found any clear answer about how, if possible, I can get papers for my pooch. Thank you for your time :)

A. A purebred dog is eligible for AKC registration if its litter has been registered. When you purchase a dog said to be AKC-registrable, you should get an individual Dog Registration Application from the seller. If you did not acquire the dog directly from the litter owner(s), you must include a Supplemental Transfer Statement for each intermediate transfer with the application. If a person acquires a dog without papers, with the explicit understanding that papers will be furnished for payment of an additional amount of money, the buyer has, in effect, forfeited any rights to the papers. If at some later date the buyer wants papers, the AKC can only advise going back to the seller to resolve the matter.

Getting a Yorkies ears to stand up?
Q. The breeder said he was a purebred yorkie. I second guess this though because he is almost 13 weeks old and already 5 lbs. I believe he is mixed with\ a Cairn or an Austrailian Terrier. Although, his features look exactly like a Yorkie, just not so much his size. When I went to go tape up his ears, he wouldn't sit still. Which would not have been a problem, but taping and wrapping takes too long! Plus, when I went to take the tape off, he screamed and cried and lost some hair! This made me very upset I almost cried seeing him hurt! Then I thought, well there's a possibility they won't stay up the first time and I'll need to keep changing the tape. I couldn't hurt him again so instead... I used those small rubber hair ties. The kinds for… [cont.]

Why is my dog's nose starting to turn brown? Is this normal?
Q. My dog is a purebred Siberian Husky and i've just realised that his nose is starting to get brown. Is it because of his feeding bowl? I use a metal bowl for him. My friend who owns a Golden Retriever has had the same problem except her Golden Retriever's nose is completely brown now. She said it was because of using a metal food bowl and something about the aluminum rubbing off onto her dog's nose but after hours of searching on the internet I couldn't find anything referring to metal food bowls rubbing the colour off dog's noses? Help? I'd like my pooch's nose to stay black! ): My puppy is 7, almost 8 weeks (yes I know that it is apparently illegal to buy a pup if it is younger than 8 weeks but I only found out last night) and i've had… [cont.]

My dog is pregnant, would this pup be considered a purebred? (I'll explain in the details)?
Q. My dog is pregnant, would this pup be considered a purebred? (I'll explain in the details)? OK, so, we had two dogs right. Lupe is our Greyhound, and is the mother, and Pooch is the father, the St. Bernard...they had puppies together so it was a Greyhound/St. Bernard mix. We also kept the puppies. It's been 2 years since they were born, and we walked in one day to find one of the puppies-Evan- (dogs I guess now) having sex with his mother, Lupe and got her pregnant...Lupe is a purebred Greyhound but her son is a Greyhound/St. Bernard mix...will the puppy by Evan (her son) be considered a purebred Greyhound then?

Crossbreed dogs are smarter than purebred?
Q. I find that purebred dogs are often quite dum with not much personality... and that crossbreeds are so much smarter and have a lot more personality. I know this is a generalisation but i have found it to be true. I am not trying to offend purebred owners, because purebreds still make great dogs I was just curious for future reference when buying a new pooch. Anyone got any ideas on this? Do you agree?

A. Smart as defined by what? That is the question you need to ask. Problem solving smart? Look toward german shepherds and schnauzers. Innate intelligence to know when people are drowning? Look toward the newfoundland Obedience smart? Look toward a lab or golden Herding smart? A border collie or many of the herding breeds. A mix being smart? Some are smart, some aren't, depends on what came out in the mix. Like Marilyn Monroe once said to Albert Einstein "Albert, we should have a child, it would have your brains and my looks!" to which Albert replied, "yes my dear, but what if it had YOUR brains and MY looks?" A mix is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get -- Forrest Gump Edited to add: Sadly,… [cont.]

A sad question- have you ever had a pup with SAS?
Q. Hi! I don't want to have to go into detail here about subaortic stenosis because I figure anyone who's had a doggie with SAS will know alll about it. So here's my situation. I have a little purebred pup (didn't pay for him, just really liked him so I have him) who has "moderate to severe" SAS. He has a level two murmur and is three months old. His little heart has been seen by a cardiologist. :-/ So my questions, hard though they may be to answer, are really for my own preparedness in the event that he doesn' t live very long. I want to have an estimate for how long he has to live. I don't want to be optimistic and then horribly let down. I think I'll be better off if I face reality. That said, the vet couldn't give me a timeline. [cont.]

Gifted mixed breed dog identifiers...What breeds do you think make up this dog?
Q. This is Zeke the "Spotted Wonder Dog". He will be 8 years old in a few weeks and while out in public no one has ever guessed his breed heritage. Ever. So here is a pic snapped with the camera phone... And here are some other relevant details... At the shoulder, he is 22 inches tall. He weighs 85 pounds. [He's actually thin enough you feel ribs - its a weird angle, I just wanted you to be able to see the full length of him. Actually, he's quite muscular] Each of his spots and the dark patches are brindle-striped. In temperament, he is very sensitive and easily trained (hence the "Wonder Dog" portion of his name). Not worth a darn as a watch dog. Licks, and licks, and licks everyone and thing freely. Each of his parents… [cont.]

A. I would have guessed Pointer, but breeds not known for being spotted leaves those out! Labrador and Boxer? Also, what do you think my girl Maggie, over there is? She's 12 and a mystery!! Edit: Yes she is a giggler! Edit: Are you sure his mother didn't have a fling with a Pointer on the side? Puppies in the same litter can have different fathers. Because he certainly does have a Pointer nose and markings.

The story of Labradoodles could there have been some sucess if it was handled differently?
Q. Determined to source the most suitable guide-dog for a client, I unwittingly turned the canine world upside down While working with the Royal Guide Dog Association of Australia as its puppy-breeding manager in the early 80s, I received a request from Hawaii. A vision-impaired woman there, whose husband was allergic to dog hair, had written to our centre in the hope that we might have an allergy-free guide-dog. Piece of cake, I thought. The standard poodle, a trainable working dog, was probably the most suitable breed, with its tightly curled coat. Although our centre bred and used labradors, I didn t anticipate any difficulties finding a suitable poodle. It turned out I was wrong: after rejecting countless poodles with various problems,… [cont.]

A. I think his intentions were Honorable. He was looking for a "New" breed of dog to be used by people who had special needs not only with wanting a service dog but one that would also meet the criteria for those people who had sever allergies to dander. It wasn't until years of trying and with very limited success that he declared this project ended and a failure. Unfortunately with all the media hype and publicity surround this even he inadvisedly I feel is the father to the Doodle craze we have today. The big difference is that he did realize that to produce this "New" breed would be almost impossible to perfect but by that time all the damage had been done. Any person from that point on saw an opening to not only breed… [cont.]

Why is it only okay to breed show dogs?
Q. Okay...I'll admit that I am pretty new to the forum. Having said this, I have definitely done my share of browsing questions/answers. I'm wondering why so many people on here are against breeding a dog if it's not for show purposes. Not everyone wants to show their dogs. Just because a dog is not "show quality" doesn't mean it won't be a great companion or service dog. Also, I see so many hypocritical answers. Purebred owners telling others to go to a shelter, when we all know that many of these owners paid a very pretty penny for their pooch...and do not show them. And also, they say, "don't breed for profit", but then will sell their own puppies for hundreds to thousands of dollars. Just curious, here. Don't mean to… [cont.]

A. I agree hypocrisy is common... however I think the basis behind this idea, is people "showing" their dogs and achieving titles, at the very least the dog will be a good physical example of the breed. And, in theory if a breeder is willing to go through the effort to show and achieve titles with their dog, hopefully they've also gone through the effort to get all the dogs health certifications done, behavioral testing done, etc. But I agree with you, more should be taken into consideration (with respect to breeding) than just a dogs conformation (being a "showdog"). And also for every person preaching "shelter" while owning an expensive purebred, there are many others who practice what they preach. And finally… [cont.]
